STEPHENS, Geoffrey Buckingham (1896-1968) Woolwich 1911; St Marylebone 1923-1956 (DL 1923, CL 1934)
ST MARYLEBONE was very late on the scene as a London library authority. Stephens, following Duncan Gray, was only the second Chief and, more fortunate than him, had a new central library to administer. His overwhelmingly successful Sherlock Holmes Exhibition was ST MARYLEBONE's contribution to the 1951 Festival of Britain and carried its fame to the far corners of the world.
